The Story
First things first. I striped down the car completely, then sent it off
to be blasted. After we got it back I primed the body with epoxy
primer. Next, we found a donor car with a good front clip. We
removed the donor clip, blasted and prepared it for the transplant.
We then removed the front clip from my 67, cleaned and primed.
We transplanted the donor clip onto my 67, welded it up and there it
was. It looked as if the car was never damaged at all.
With a new front clip, Rear quarters, doors, fenders and trunk area
rebuilt, an Eleanor body kit was fitted and them modified. The upper
ram scoops of the Eleanor kit were deleted in favor of 67 Shelby style
air extractors to draw cabin air out, not ram outside air in. Then the
lower scoops were cut open and backing panels constructed to make
the lower scoops functional rear brake cooler ducts just like the
original 67 Shelby`s had.
We didn't like the safety issues the relocated gas filler pipe presented
on the Eleanor, so we opted to cut the tail panel out like an original
Shelby and used a Billet Aluminum twist on cap with a chrome Cobra
logo. Door handles and lock were shaved for that clean look.
67 Shelby tail lights fitted with sequential LED panels light up the
rear. The nose is the Eleanor front end with the lower side scoop
inserts from the Mustang quarter panels molded into the sides. The
center holes used on Eleanor for Turn signals were put back to front
brake cooling ducts as the R-model Shelby used. No doubt the source
of the original design. 65 Mustang turn signal assemblies were graft
into the front valance. Pia lights and T-3 Halogen headlights and
some small spot light driving lights finish out the front end lighting,
trimmed out with upper and lower billet grills. Aluminum Bullet side
mirrors we also used.
The hood was another challenge altogether . We started with an
Eleanor hood, but because of a engine clearance problem, we needed
a taller scoop. We cut out the scoop section and fiber glassed in a
Corvette L-88 hood scoop and some 68 Shelby heat extractor louvers.
The Paint:
Black or Green?
The paint is Jet black Base coat with a green pearl inner mix clear
coat. This combination gives the illusion a Black or Green car,
depending on the light, which is the perfect color for Eleanors evil
nemesis.
The Drive train
Under the Hood is a Ford Motor sports 351W stroked to 392 CI
crate motor with a Holley 850 carb, 100 shot of NOS and backed up
by a PA Performance street/strip AOD transmission. All billet
aluminum march performance pulleys, billet alternator, A/C
compressor and spark plug wire covers. Cooled by a Griffin
aluminum radiator. Exhaust system has a Hooker header system
with 2 ½” X pipe, into the Dr. Gas mufflers and out the custom
made chrome side pipe outlets. We installed Global West sub
frame connectors to strengthen up the unibody and a TCP shock
tower brace set-up for the front end.
4 Wheel power disc brakes stops this beast on a dime. A 9 inch
Lincoln Versailles rear end with Posi Trac nodular case in the rear.
TCP coil over front suspension. Power Rack and pinion steering by
Randall's Racks complete the package. Gt- 40 rims and low profile
Goodyear Eagle F1 tires were used to complete the
suspension.
The Interior
Inside are custom covered racing bucket seats recovered and
designed to look like the 67 Seats with real comfort weave inserts and
Corinthian vinyl side bolsters and custom embroidered Cobras, in
green of course. White faced Handline gauges with LCD back light.
A Modified 68 Shelby console with brushed aluminum trim holds the
control panel for the electric fuel pumps, accessories and of course,
the "Go Baby Go" button. Dash was done in 67 deluxe style with
brushed stainless steel instead of the Aluminum, passengers side
signed by Carrol Shelby himself. We also added electric windows.
Sound system with 7" flip touch screen CD/DVD player and Eleanor
gauge panel finish out the dash. 67 Shelby style roll bar with inertia
locking shoulder belts and fold down rear seat complete the interior.
